10th edition of Tour of Nilgiris (TfN) attracts celebrity cyclists; TfN 2017 to be flagged off on December 10

Bengaluru, December 8, 2017: The 10th edition of Tour of Nilgiris (TfN), the annual tour of RideACycle Foundation which has attracted celebrity cyclists to pedal the grand tour, will be flagged off on December 10, 2017 from Radisson Blu Atria, Bengaluru at 6:30 a.m. The grand tour will witness 128 cyclists pedal more than 1000 kms across Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu, between December 10 and 17, 2017. Starting from Bengaluru the cyclists will pedal through Mysuru, Madikeri, Sultan Bathery, Udhagamandalam (Ooty) and finish it by pedaling back to Mysore.

Addressing a press conference here today, Satish Belawadi, Tour Director, TfN 2017, said, “In the 10th edition we are witnessing the largest cycling contingent participation of 128 cyclists and what is more satisfying is that the grand tour has attracted top ranking cyclists who have impressive cycling credentials to their name. What is revealing of this grand tour is that it has proved to be a stepping stone and launch pad for budding talent – Naveen John and Kiran Kumar Raju have already proved their mettle at the national level.”


The celebrity cyclists to pedal TfN 2017 include Alexi Grewal – an Indian American to win an Olympic Gold Medal in road cycling in 1984; Lt. Col. Dr. Srinivas Gokulnath, India’s first RAAM finisher (Race Across America – 5000 kms in 11 days 18 hours); Naveen John, with 3x National ITT Championships and a national Road Race championship under his belt, he is probably the finest cyclist coming out of India; and Kiran Kumar Raju, National MTB Championship Winner – 2015 & 2016. The winners at TfN 2017 will earn themselves the top range of Firefox bikes.

According to Deepak Majipatil, Co-Founder, RAC-F, “We have been creating several initiatives to promote cycling culture amongst the masses. Tour of Nilgiris (TfN) is our flagship event and we are celebrating a decade of this event in 2017. We are happy that our TfN’s ambitious program to nurture cycling talent is paying off, at the same time we have the satisfaction of giving back to society through our charity riders. Most of the editions of TfN have witnessed charity riders and in this edition also we have 4 charity riders pedaling for three organizations. Further, our 10 years of effort has put India on the global cycling map and cyclists from across the globe are keen to pedal this grand tour”.


TfN 2017 will witness 4 charity riders riding to support the social initiatives dear to them. While, Rajanikanth Puttabuddi will be the charity rider for Kenneth Anderson Nature Society (This organization focusses on wildlife conservation in the Melagiri forest region spanning the Hosur and Dharmapuri Forest Divisions of Tamil Nadu); Shankar Jayaraman will raise funds for Sita Bhateja Speciality Hospital (The aim is to make spine surgery affordable and accessible to everyone especially the underprivileged); and Vivek Radhakrishnan & Rajkumar Khot will pedal for Iksha Foundation (a charitable trust focusing on Retinoblastoma (eye cancer).

Alexi Grewal, Olympic Gold Medallist, said “For ten years I have looked forward to riding my bicycle in India and I am so incredibly satisfied I can join the Tour of Nilgiris 2017 in its tenth anniversary. It will be a ride of a life time for me, and I will treasure the experience for a lifetime.” Likewise, Lt. Col. Dr. Srinivas Gokulnath, said, “”Cycling is more than a hobby for me that not only provides motivation but also helps me to maintain fitness and stay relaxed.”

Of the 128 cyclists set to pedal TfN 2017, 120 are men, while 8 are women. Further, 110 cyclists are from different parts of India, while 18 are from overseas and hail from The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, USA and Russia. Profile of the cyclists pedaling TfN 2017, reveal that 65 per cent of the cyclists are senior and middle management professionals from different industry domains.

Firefox Bikes & Jayant Probikes & Fitness have been trusted partners on TfN for past several years and they are key to growing cycling ecosystem in Bangalore & India. Isuzu India has become a critical cog in the TfN route with them being the Logistics Partners on the tour while Radisson Blu Atria has extended their hospitality to all the rider & volunteers, supporting TfN2017 as the Hospitality Partners on the tour. Sita Bhateja Specialty Hospital & Spectrum Physio need special mention as they support the tour with ambulance, doctors and expert physios who take care of the health and safety of the entire entourage while they cover more than 1000 kms across South India.
